An Introduction to Google Project

This instructional design Google project is for Sentry Technology Charter High School in Brownsville, an alternative high school program. Most of the students come from half-way houses and have not been able to adjust to regular public school or need alternative education. Many of the students are not aware of the numerous capabilities that Google tools has to offer. Because Google tools are free, available where ever there is Internet, and a format that is of interest to younger people, knowing how to use Google tools will help these students become more computer literate, have easy access to word processing and spreadsheets and have access to presentation and drawing software.

In this training 11th and 12th grade students will learn how to create Google Docs and Google Calendar under the direction of their lead English teacher Mr. Raul Ibarra who is not trained on Google tools, however, Mr. Ibarra has agreed for me to mentor him by using this instructional design unit. Google tools are extensive so, for this introductory unit, only Google Docs and Google Calendar will be taught to the students. Google docs will help them learn how to use proper formatting of papers, spell and grammar check and basic publishing. Google Calendar will help them with time management.

The learning goal will be to have the students become familiar enough with the two Google tools to use for class assignments for the rest of the school year. This will help prepare them for the workforce, go back to a regular high school or continue on for higher education.

I intent to use attitude change to have the students use tools to empower them to continue on to complete high school or attend higher education. Also, psychomotor skills to develop the navigation and keyboarding skills that can be carried over to accomplish other Google or computer tools for learning, time management and professional presentations.
